Alternative House has a very active volunteer program. Volunteers help us cook dinner, tutor young people, do yard work, light cleaning, donation sorting, answer our Hotline and act as mentors. In fact, volunteers play so many roles at Alternative House, it would be impossible to list them all.
In 2012, 1,350 volunteers provided almost 10,000 hours of community service. Using Fairfax County's valuation of volunteer hours, that equates to almost $200,000 of time and talent given to the young people served by Alternative House.
Alternative House is always looking for a variety of volunteers. Our volunteer opportunities generally fall into two categories:
Volunteers who Interact Directly with Youth
These opportunities usually involve a formal application and interview process, a background check, a 6- to 12-month commitment, a regular schedule, and, substantial training.
If you're interested in this type of volunteer position at Alternative House, your first step is to attend one of our Volunteer Information Sessions. During these sessions, you will learn about Alternative House and its programs and get more information about what's involved in becoming an Alternative House volunteer.
Special Project and Event Volunteers
These opportunities generally involve no long-term commitment, little training, and no application process.
Special project and event volunteer opportunities
If you're interested in becoming a special project or event volunteer, please call Christine Bartell, Office Administrator/Volunteer Coordinator, at 703.506.9191 or email her at Christine_Bartell@TheAlternativeHouse.org.
