Volunteer Opportunities

A number of Alternative House's current volunteer opportunities that involve interacting with program participants are listed below. These opportunities generally entail a 6- to 12-month commitment and attendance at one or more training sessions. Prospective volunteers for these positions must complete an application and interview process and may be subject to a background check and, in some cases, a TB test. (There is a $23.00 fee, payable by the volunteer, for the background check.)

Childcare Volunteer (AYM)

We currently do not have any openings for AYM Childcare Volunteers. But please check back periodically, as opportunities becomd available frequently.

Volunteers provide a helping hand for high-risk young children by helping them develop education, life and social skills so they can progress at a level consistent with their age. Volunteers enrich the experience of the young children by helping to educate them and develop their skills and supporting the childhood development specialist. More information>>>

Outreach Volunteer

Culmore Teen Center needs volunteers to: engage informally with youth; serve as positive role models; provide encouragement and support to youth; provide homework help; and, participate in recreation activities and life skill group sessions. The Teen Center is a drop-in recreation facility for middle school and high school students, located in the Culmore neighborhood in Falls Church. More information>>>

Emergency Teen Shelter Volunteer

The Emergency Teen Shelter needs volunteers to: work directly with Shelter residents; participate in life skill groups, lead recreation activities, assist counselors with daily duties, and answer call on our Crisis Hotline. More information>>>

Safe Youth Project (SYP) Volunteer

SYP volunteers provide a helping hand for at-risk young people and help youth develop education, life and social skills. This empowers youth to gain the self-confidence necessary to make positive decisions and become successful and independent community members. Volunteers enrich the experiences of participating youth by engaging with them and being supportive of them, and by serving as support for program staff. More information>>>

Youth Advisory Council

The Youth Advisory Council works to increase awareness of the Emergency Shelter for Teens within the teen community and to promote the Shelter with schools. The Advisory Council also provides input into Alternative House programs. More information>>>
